For the third year in a row zPaper is teaming up with CareHarbor LA (once CareNow LA) and the Salesforce Foundation to bring health care to those who need it, but can’t afford it, in the Los Angeles area. Though we are a small part of the event, digitizing all the paperwork that goes along with the medical care at the event and tying it into Salesforce, we take a great deal of pride in doing our part to help those less fortunate. We would also like to take this opportunity to applaud all the Doctors, Dentists, Nurses and other health care professionals who are volunteering their time to help those in need. They are the true champions of this event.

What is CareHarbor?

More than 50 million Americans are without health insurance. Many more have no dental or vision coverage or cannot afford their high deductibles. Care Harbor is responding to this enormous need on three fronts.

First, they provide free care on a massive scale. They do everything from eye exams to tooth extractions, and everything in between. Seeing as many people as possible in just four days.

Second, they offer extensive prevention and education resources. Knowing that many medical conditions can be avoided if the proper steps are taken, they strive to educate people as to how they can prevent larger problems from arising.

Third, they work with local organizations to provide follow up care for the patients they see. This isn’t just a one and done kind of exam or procedure. CareHarbor gets at least 25% of the people they see into a follow-up exam.

But businesses that are considering or have chosen cloud computing to reduce IT expenditures – perhaps with the electric utility analogy in mind – should also consider another energy industry analogy – specifically, the increased use of coal during the Industrial Revolution – and the Jevons Paradox.

While analyzing the iron industry in 1865, economist William Stanley Jevons surmised that as the coal-burning furnaces used to make iron became more efficient—the overall consumption of coal would likely increase as a result – a seeming paradox on the surface.

As Jevons noted, more efficient furnaces could produce more iron for the same price of coal – so factories would therefore build more furnaces. This would in turn increase the supply of iron, and lower its price. But as iron becomes less expensive, it becomes more cost-effective to be used in other applications. This, of course, dramatically increases the demand for iron, which gets more furnaces built—and ultimately, creates much greater consumption of coal than would have occurred if its price had remained constant. This “Jevons effect”, as the Jevons Paradox is also known today, shows that the reduction of the cost of a valuable resource, be it coal – or computing power – often tends only to increase the consumption of that resource.

So, though cloud computing surely saves businesses money in delivering traditional IT services like email, it’s a safe bet that those businesses will choose to deliver new IT services that they could never have afforded in the past. At the same time, ever more compelling applications will emerge “on the cloud.” Ultimately, the efficiencies of cloud computing may ultimately result in increased IT spending in general for many business – even while their internal IT infrastructure purchases continue to decrease.

The good news is that the new IT services cloud computing will bring to business have only begun to be delivered. As a case in point, true line-of-business applications are rarely found on today’s hugely popular consumer-oriented mobile computing devices—such as the Apple® iPad® and Android® tablets – yet cloud computing should help change this rapidly.
