CareHarbor, Salesforce Foundation, and zPaper…helping those in need

zPaper is Bringing Technology to Those Who need it
For the third year in a row zPaper is teaming up with CareHarbor LA (once CareNow LA) and the Salesforce Foundation to bring health care to those who need it, but can’t afford it, in the Los Angeles area. Though we are a small part of the event, digitizing all the paperwork that goes along with the medical care at the event and tying it into Salesforce, we take a great deal of pride in doing our part to help those less fortunate. We would also like to take this opportunity to applaud all the Doctors, Dentists, Nurses and other health care professionals who are volunteering their time to help those in need. They are the true champions of this event.
What is CareHarbor?
More than 50 million Americans are without health insurance. Many more have no dental or vision coverage or cannot afford their high deductibles. Care Harbor is responding to this enormous need on three fronts.
First, they provide free care on a massive scale. They do everything from eye exams to tooth extractions, and everything in between. Seeing as many people as possible in just four days.
Second, they offer extensive prevention and education resources. Knowing that many medical conditions can be avoided if the proper steps are taken, they strive to educate people as to how they can prevent larger problems from arising.
Third, they work with local organizations to provide follow up care for the patients they see. This isn’t just a one and done kind of exam or procedure. CareHarbor gets at least 25% of the people they see into a follow-up exam.

Comments on the News
“zPaper:Mobile has been featured in several charitable healthcare events sponsored by organizations like CareHarbor.org,” noted zPaper CTO and founder Dr. Eric Stephens. “Our latest release is optimized to support mobile apps built on the Salesforce Platform, and includes offline capabilities for capturing data, markup, and signatures. In the DevZone, we will be showcasing our new blended approach to mobile development that harnesses the power of native iOS code from within an HTML framework.”
• “Companies around the globe are transforming the way they connect with customers, partners and employees through social and mobile cloud solutions,” said Mike Rosenbaum, senior vice president AppExchange and Force.com Operations, salesforce.com. “Partners such as zPaper, are leveraging the power of the Salesforce Platform to provide customers with the right tools to accelerate their success in the cloud.”
“zPaper’s mobile app brings us to the forefront of the digital paper landscape,” said Yuri Trejo, Client Relations Manager for Bioness, the California-based developer of medical devices that help individuals with central nervous system disorders, such as stroke, or traumatic brain injury (TBI), regain movement in affected limbs. “This app allows our reps to work with our product order forms offline, and then to present them to customers for their signature directly on their iPads— whether or not an Internet connection is available. Later, back at the office, the signed form and the actual data from the forms is synchronized with the appropriate Salesforce records with no re-keying—saving us time while reducing errors— a significant improvement to our process, which tangibly enhances our customer experience.”

Among the free, mobility-enhancing functionality included within the zPaper:Mobile client is a multisite, single sign-on service—which provides seamless access and navigation of multiple cloud-based applications—even where different usernames and passwords are required—as well as other novel functionality to aid the mobile professional in the field, including device screen sharing, local document management and markup, and Bluetooth peer-to-peer networking.
When integrated with zPaper’s other proven AppExchange solutions for doc, data, and fax automation (e.g. zPaper:Fax), the zPaper:Mobile client forms a powerful platform for delivering and supporting efficient, effective, and portable cloud applications for any mobile devices supporting the open HTML 5.0 standard.

Why the Jevons Paradox suggests you shouldn’t choose cloud computing only to save money…
Tuesday, August 7th, 2012
Businesses are often first attracted to cloud computing because of its potential to reduce IT costs. In the classic argument to illustrate this cost-cutting potential, analogies are frequently drawn between cloud computing and the development of the electric utility industry early in the 20thCentury. In short, the emergence of cheap and reliable electrical power – made possible by the economies of scale and scope achieved as electric companies matured – compelled manufacturers to stop generating their own energy – and instead to obtain it more cheaply (and reliably) from outside sources.
But businesses that are considering or have chosen cloud computing to reduce IT expenditures – perhaps with the electric utility analogy in mind – should also consider another energy industry analogy – specifically, the increased use of coal during the Industrial Revolution – and the Jevons Paradox.
While analyzing the iron industry in 1865, economist William Stanley Jevons surmised that as the coal-burning furnaces used to make iron became more efficient—the overall consumption of coal would likely increase as a result – a seeming paradox on the surface.
As Jevons noted, more efficient furnaces could produce more iron for the same price of coal – so factories would therefore build more furnaces. This would in turn increase the supply of iron, and lower its price. But as iron becomes less expensive, it becomes more cost-effective to be used in other applications. This, of course, dramatically increases the demand for iron, which gets more furnaces built—and ultimately, creates much greater consumption of coal than would have occurred if its price had remained constant. This “Jevons effect”, as the Jevons Paradox is also known today, shows that the reduction of the cost of a valuable resource, be it coal – or computing power – often tends only to increase the consumption of that resource.
So, though cloud computing surely saves businesses money in delivering traditional IT services like email, it’s a safe bet that those businesses will choose to deliver new IT services that they could never have afforded in the past. At the same time, ever more compelling applications will emerge “on the cloud.” Ultimately, the efficiencies of cloud computing may ultimately result in increased IT spending in general for many business – even while their internal IT infrastructure purchases continue to decrease.
The good news is that the new IT services cloud computing will bring to business have only begun to be delivered. As a case in point, true line-of-business applications are rarely found on today’s hugely popular consumer-oriented mobile computing devices—such as the Apple® iPad® and Android® tablets – yet cloud computing should help change this rapidly. Look out for future zPaper Business and Technology Updates where we’ll discuss the mobile computing frontiers that cloud computing and the right cloud-aware technologies are making accessible to businesses today.
Your Corporation’s IT Strategy: Driven from the top down, or from the bottom up?
Thursday, July 12th, 2012
Is your corporation’s IT strategy aligned with its general business plan? Or perhaps your company doesn’t seem to have much of an IT strategy at all? In general, is your IT organization detached from and frequently misunderstood by senior management?
Harvard professor Michael Porter—whose writings on business strategy have been part of the core curriculum in business schools for decades—maintains that technology strategy—now, more than ever—must be driven from the highest levels of the organization, and must be fully integrated into overall corporate strategy.
Porter has noted that historically, technology deployment decisions have tended to “trickle up” from downstream IT groups—often resulting in one-size-fits-all solutions that aren’t necessarily in the best interest of the organization as a whole. Different areas of a business may very well need different systems. The sales department may be best served by a hosted application—while an order processing system might rightly be maintained in-house. Obvious, perhaps, but in organizations lacking a comprehensive, executive-level IT strategy, deviations from “IT standards” are often difficult to justify or implement. Ultimately, without full integration of technology planning at the executive level, management is often only able to react to fix the symptoms of bad technology decisions—and may be unable to address the core issues that caused them in the first place.
